Art Morris now swears by the 70-200 F2.8 IS2 and the 2x tele, but that's the latest, most expensive version of the 70-200, and I wouldn't put a 2X on any of the earlier models. With the 70-200 already in hand (and the F4 is a nice lens), much of the lens range of the 100-400 overlaps it, so to some degree, you're wasting money with it.
I already own the Canon 70-200 2.8 II. The question is, what will give me sharper images: (1) Tamron 150-600 or (2) the Canon 70-200 2.8 II + Canon Extender EF 2X III. Obviously, buying the extender would be a lot cheaper and lighter than carrying around another heavy zoom.

Y Pre-CES 2010: Canon has released a successor to its professional workhorse fast telezoom, in the shape of the EF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS II USM. Although outwardly similar to its predecessor, the new lens features a revised optical design, incorporating a fluorite element and no fewer than 5 UD elements for the correction of chromatic aberrations. The minimum focus distance has been reduced to 1.2m

"The Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM II is currently not just the best out of 70-200 lenses that can fit on your Canon but the best lens in that category across the industry (nobody makes a better 70-200)." Absolutely! It really doesn't matter even if an upgrade is coming out. This lens is so good you will love it.

Hmm. "EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM + Extender EF1.4x III" is notably absent from the 20fps list, even though the 200-400 with stacked internal 1.4x and external 2x extenders makes the cut.

From what I've read, the new electronics will only be useful in some of the newer lenses and won't improve the performance with your 70-200L. As for the improved optics, most reviewers have indicated that the difference in IQ between the 1.4x II and III is pretty slight, while the difference between the 2x II and III is more noticeable.
Canon 2X extender w/ Sigma Lenses. I have a Canon EF 2X II extender and have been happy with its performance w/ a friend's compatible Canon lenses. I am considering purchasing a Sigma APO 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM Lens to use on my Digital Rebel (alone and with the extender). I know the Canon equivalent lense is compatible with the 2X Canon

Jan 4, 2021 • Review of Canon RF 2x Extender. 25. With how well the RF 1.4x extender has been working with my R5 and RF 100-500L lens, I had to bite the bullet and get the RF 2x as well to see if it was able to put on a similar performance. Before getting an R5, I used both the EF 1.4x III and 2x III extenders with the 100-400L MKII lens, and

For that kind of scenario the 2x is still worth having but use it wisely ! Results will of course vary depending on which lens you are attaching the extenders too. The 300mm f2.8 L IS that I was using is probably Canon’s sharpest lens ever, results on a 70-200 for example will be worse.

A Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0L Lens mounted over a 2x becomes a 140-400mm f/8 lens. A Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS Lens becomes a 600mm f/5.6 IS lens. And, as shown in my Canon EF 2x III Extender review examples above, the Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L USM Macro Lens becomes a 360mm f/7.1 USM Macro Lens. The RF 70-200 F4L is smaller aperture alternative to the bigger, more expensive ($2699 vs $1599 USD) F2.8 lens. My first L series lens personally was the original Canon EF 70-200mm F4L, a lens that is still the cheapest point of entry into the L (Luxury) series. That lens lacked stabilization and so was a little harder to use, but it was a
SLRgear Review October 3, 2011 by Andrew Alexander. The Canon 1.4x lens extender extends the focal length of a lens by 40%, making (for example) a 200mm lens function as a 280mm lens.
